Cluny Convent Opportunity School was started in June 1982 with seven children. It is integrated with Cluny Convent High School. At present, there are 60 students between the age group of 6 - 15 years who are divided into academic group, non-academic group and the national open school exam group. The students of the Opportunity School have the privilege to take part in all the extra curricular activities of the main school. We have girls as well as boys in the Opportunity School.
The school provides special children the ability to communicate well, to help themselves and to be independent. Basic vocational training is also provided. The primary aim of educating the mentally retarded children is to make every child reach his or her maximum potential and to make each one as independent and socially acceptable as possible. The school helps to mould these youngsters to live a full life in the modern society as worthy citizens.
The intellectual ability and behavioral problems of the child is assessed by psychologists and teachers. Based on their age and ability, the students are divided into groups in order to meet the needs of every child in the class. The training group is given activities to improve their physical and mental coordination skills ensuring at the same time emotional growth. The academic group is coached with the state syllabus book and when they are fully prepared, they take up the national school open examination, which is equal to the 10th standard examination.
The curriculum is planned and taught through meaningful and varied educational activities. Apart from reading, writing, number concept, time and money value, the children are given all-round formation. To develop Gross Motor and Fine Motor skills, children are engaged in games, sports, yoga & cultural events. They are given training in self help skills, social skills, prevocational skills, recreational skills, arts and crafts etc.
Children are given various opportunities to participate in sports competitions like inter-school sports, state and national level special olympics etc and also in various cultural activities such as drawing, painting, singing, dramatics, clay modeling, candle making etc. They have outings every year which they look forward to with enthusiasm.
The students of our Opportunity School have many privileges since it is integrated with the main school. The staff and students of the main school have special concern for these special children as they too, are the gifts of God. This enables them to accept and help the weaker section of the society here, now and in the future.
